Project Overview

The proposed St Paul's Community Theatre, has been designed to cater to a diversity of cultural and technical needs. At its heart lies a 600 seat auditorium and associated stage in which to gather and entertain. It also encompasses two elevated dance studios which will offer a venue to both train and perform.

With a soaring void, the new foyer is in itself is a community working space. It can serve its traditional role as a gathering place at performance times but also be a ‘performance’space in its own right - as a venue for a diverse range of community uses such as art shows, debates and exhibitions to intimate musical performances.

The ‘back of house’ areas are seen as part of the active opportunities. Areas for costume, musical practice, drama rehearsal and the assembly of scenery.

The building design evolved based on a rhythmical and lit colonnade with an integrated relationship with its surroundings.

The columns carefully define the transition between interior and exterior without diminishing the visual permeability. This serves as a connective threshold between landscape and building between inside and out, where both the surrounds and building benefit from each other.
