Project Overview

Following the successful master plan delivery in 2024, Unity Grammar School commissioned Wetherill Architects to design their new Junior Precinct in Austral, NSW. Test

The front approach is formal and symmetrical with minaret-like elements offering welcome.  This transition to a deep, shaded porch (iwan and riwaq-like) creates a ceremonial threshold from public street to the school’s inner realm.  Processional skylights along the spine bring natural light into the space and connect the teaching spaces. These vertical pools of light express the link between human and divine. The glimpse of trees, visible through the transparent central axis with glazing on both sides, reinforces the idea of a peaceful and contemplative inner garden. A place to gather and learn as a community.

Each module stands alone yet connects to others, forming an infinite, harmonious whole — reflecting unity within multiplicity. Odd-numbered groupings and mirrored symmetry create rhythm and movement, avoiding rigidity and inviting reflection.

Natural concrete, warm copper accents, pale bricks, and grey masonry base create natural tones and durable finishes valued in both Islamic and Australian design.  Screens and perforated panels create moving shadow patterns that recall traditional Islamic light play, while keeping interiors cool and glare-free.
